Among Waugh's most popular works, this novel has appeared in many editions, & is the basis for the acclaimed 1965 film version with screenplay by Terry Southern & Christopher Isherwood featuring many disparate stars including John Gielgud, Robert Morley, Milton Berle, Tab Hunter & even Liberace. The "Whispering Glades" referred to in the novel is a thinly disguised version of the famous Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California. First published in the UK during 1948, The Loved One: An Anglo-American Tragedy is a bitingly witty spoof of the American funeral industry, as well as the clash of British & American cultures, which Waugh observed while on a sojourn to Hollywood. The classic satirical novel by Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966), the legendary & prolific British author. London, England: The Folio Society, 1993.
